Trekanten i Rondane

The Rondane triangle route is one of the most famous Norwegian multi-day hikes. The five day trek takes you into the heart of Rondane National Park, Norway’s oldest. The trail travels through the green valleys and over the rocky mountains and provides a wonderful introduction to the park.

The route starts with a short first day, hiking from Spranget parking lot to the Rondvassbu cabin. From Rondvassbu, after a boat ride across Rondvatnet Lake, begins three days of fairly long hikes that form a triangle through the national park. The final day is the return leg from Rondvassbu to Spranget.

The stage between Spranget and Rondvassbu takes only about two hours to walk, so it’s possible to do a longer hike on the first or last day and complete the route in three or four days. However, it’s recommended to allocate 5 days in total and use the first and last days to travel to and from Rondane.

Seasons

The summer hiking season in Rondane usually lasts from mid-June until the end of September. Snow can still be on the ground until late June, but typically it’s possible to hike from June and sometimes from late May.

The Rondane mountains range from 1,000 to 2,000 meters above sea level and summers are not generally very warm. Expect temperatures between 10 and 20°C.

What to bring

Make sure to bring warm clothes as well as hiking gear for warmer weather. In the Norwegian mountains you must always be prepared for all conditions so bring woollen base layers, a hat, and gloves.

Rondane is a very rocky area so good hiking boots are essential.

Drinking water is available from all creeks and rivers in the area and there is no need to filter the water.

Getting there

The hike starts from Spranget parking lot in Rondane. The parking lot is located along the gravel road from Mysusæter into the national park.

Car
Drive from Otta to Mysusæter. When you arrive in Mysusæter, turn left at the small grocery store at the end of the road. Follow this road up and through some turns before turning right to follow the road uphill towards the national park. At the start of this hill, there is a toll booth (20 NOK) which accepts credit card. From the toll booth, drive another 4 kilometers until you reach the parking lot at Spranget. Parking is free.

Note that the road to Spranget can be closed until the 15th of June due to snow, so check in advance if you’re arriving early in the season.

Public transportation
Otta can be easily reached by direct train from Oslo or Trondheim. From Otta take the bus through Mysusæter to Spranget. Usually, there is one bus in the morning and one in the afternoon. Check the timetable at Entur or opplandstrafikk.no or call Opplandstrafikk at +47 61 28 90 00.

Accommodation

This route has three different accommodations along the trail; Rondvassbu, Øvre/Nedre Dørålseter and Bjørnhollia tourist lodges. All of them offer a three-course dinner, breakfast and a packed lunch. They are not hotels, but the service offered is similar.

All three lodges offer discounted prices if you are a member of the Norwegian Trekking Association. A one-year membership costs 680 NOK and you will save about 1,000 NOK over four nights. A membership provides access to more than 500 cabins around Norway.
