Om Torfinnstinden

Mount Torfinnstinden uniquely consists of three peaks Vestre, Øystre, and Midtre—located in the southern part of Jotunheimen National Park. It's possible to traverse the entire mountain, but Øystre requires technical climbing while Vestre and Midtre Torfinnstinden can be reached by foot. This guide focuses only on summiting the Vestre peak, located at 2,090 meters above sea level.

This may be a challenging hike, but you'll be rewarded with incredible views from the top.

Step 1: Arrive via bus or car to Bygdin

From Oslo, take the NW161 Valdresekspressen to the stop “Bygdin”.

From Oslo, head north on E16, towards Bergen, for 185 kilometers. When you reach Fagernes, follow signs to road 51, towards Vågå/Beitostølen. Follow road 51 for another 50 kilometers until you reach Bygdin. Here you will find parking.

Step 2: Hike or ride on a boat to Torfinnsbu

It's a very straightforward hike along Bygdin Lake and is about 5 km.

The M/B Bitihorn boat across Bygdin Lake departs twice-daily. Time-tables and more information can be found here.

Another option to arrive at Torsfinnsu by hiking from Fondsbu and Gjendebu

From the Torfinnsbu Tourist Lodge, you will quickly gain altitude. Follow the trail's red T-sign posts until it flattens out onto Svartdalen, at approximately 1,200 meters above sea level. Along the trail, you'll be surrounded by beautiful grassy slopes with rich flora.

From Svartdalen, follow the ridge towards Torfinnstindene along a sparingly kept trail with views of the steep mountains. Continue on this trail before reaching the first "chute" down from the summit. You'll then pass a shelving system, just east of the second chute and after some easy scrambling, you'll enter the chute. Follow this until about 2,000 meters above sea level, before exiting to the west (left). You will then follow the ridge until reaching the plateau at the top.
