Om Giant’s Cauldrons in Åbødalen
The Giant’s Cauldrons, known as “Jettegrytene” in Norwegian, are a family-friendly attraction in Åbødalen Valley. Over centuries the rushing water has carved holes in the rock, creating small “cauldrons”. There’s also a small waterfall to see.
The valley is a popular destination for locals on a warm summers day and at Storemyr, by the trailhead, there is a swimming and picnic area. The terrain can be wet and marshy so waterproof footwear is recommended.
Åbødalen is a short detour from Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke. The trail starts from next to the swimming area at Storemyrtjørna Lake, 7.7 kilometers north of Sauda.
From the center of Sauda, head north on Rådhusgata, which changes name to Espelandsvegen and follows the Nordelva River north. Continue along this road, eventually crossing the river and arriving at Storemyrtjørna, where there is a parking lot.
This trail explores some of the surrounding nature before heading towards the cauldrons. If you want an easier hike, just follow the road north from the parking lot straight towards Buer and join the trail there.
From the northern bank of the lake, follow the trail northwest past some cabins and through a marshy area until you meet the river. Follow the river north until it bends to the right at Buer.
Turn left at the road and continue north, before joining another trail which quickly leads to the cauldrons.
Head back to the parking lot a long the road to the south.
