Skomakarnibbå is a mountain outcrop around 700 meters above the Jøsenfjord, near Hjelmeland. While it’s not possible to hike out to the outcrop itself, the trail to the plateau above is a popular hike, with 360 degree views from a nearby peak.
Skomakarnibbå and the surrounding mountain can be seen rising steeply across the fjord from the Ryfylke scenic route as you drive Road 13 east of Nesvik.
Parts of the trail are quite wet and marshy so waterproof footwear is recommended.
The trailhead to Skomakarnibbå is a short detour from Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke. In Hjelmeland, look for the sign to “Vormedalen” just before you reach the ferry dock and turn right onto Vågavegen Road.
Follow this road out of town and over the bridge. Shortly after you’ll see signs to Hagalid and Skomakarnibbå. Turn left and follow this road for 5 kilometers. There is a parking area around 200 meters before you reach the farm buildings.
Walk up the road through the farm and then follow the dirt road through the pasture around the lake. The markings lead to a forest trail that heads up towards the mountain.
The trail is quite wet, and sometimes steep, on the way up to Øksnafjellet. The hard climb is worth it though, with wide mountain views opening up as you ascend.
On Øksnafjellet the trail now flattens out on the way towards Ullviksjuvet Canyon, which drops sharply down to the Jøsenfjord below. Watch your step. Shortly after you will reach the plateau above Skomakarnibbå. Do not try and hike out to the outcrop, it is an almost 600 meter drop.
Stop at the large cairn by the Høgeheia peak to enjoy the panoramic view.
