Om Komagdalen Bird Trail
The Varanger Peninsula is a wonderful destination for bird watchers. To further increase accessibility for birders, the national park has created the Komagdalen Bird Trail. The clear trail is also an easy way to get a taste of Varangerhalvøya National Park, starting at the park’s eastern edge and leading in towards the Komagelva River.
The area is home to a mix of species common elsewhere and those more common to Finnmark. There are 5 signs along the path highlighting birds you are likely to spot.
A brochure from the national park has more information about the local birdlife.
The trailhead is a short drive from Norwegian Scenic Route Varanger (Road 75).
On Road 75, just south of Komagværstranda, turn onto the gravel road. Follow this road for 7 kilometers to the end where you will find a parking lot.
The trail begins from the parking lot. It is clear and well-marked but can be wet.
Head down the steps and continue along the gravel road. You’ll soon reach a shelter and an information board placed at the border to the national park.
Turn right here, heading over the creek. The trail continues, passing small information boards and eventually meeting the Komagelva River. The trail finishes at the fifth board.
