Om Grimsdalshytta to Toftemo

The fourth stage of Tour de Dovre Cycle Route takes you from Grimsdalen Valley to Toftemo lodge in Gudbrandsdalen Valley. Sandwiched between Dovre and Rondane National Parks, this is possibly the most scenic leg of the entire cycle route. In summer, you will see an abundance of grazing animals in the mountain farm valley of Grimsdalen. Marvel at the many cultural heritage sites along the way, including the St Olav’s well where you can fill up your water bottle with health-giving water.

This leg has a 150-meter long climb which can be tough but rest assured that this the only ascent on this stretch. You are rewarded for your endurance by a downhill ride with sweeping views of Gudbrandsdalen Valley the final 15 kilometers of the route.

Veibeskrivelse

Grimsdalshytta can be reached by car from Oslo in about 5 hours, from Trondheim in about 3.5 hours and from Bergen in about 8 hours. The cabin is situated in Grimsdalen Valley which lies between the valleys of Folldal and Gudbrandsdalen.

Turbeskrivelse

From Grimsdalshytta continue westwards through Grimsdalen Valley. Along the road, you will find small brown signs where you can read more about the history of the place. The road is fairly flat, but after 11 kilometers you will start climbing up to an elevation of 1,175 meters above sea level. You will be climbing up 150 meters, but this is also the only ascent throughout the entire day.

1.5 kilometers into the ascent you should see a bench on the side of the road. This is a good place for a rest while taking in the sweeping views of Grimsdalen Valley. There is also an information board here telling you more about the nature in Grimsdalen Valley.

The road now flattens out a bit, although still ascending, for another 3.5 kilometers. You will get to some cabins by some small lakes and a road junction. Continue straight ahead here as the road on your left-hand side takes you into Haverdalen and Haverdalseter.

Five hundred meters after the road junction, the road starts to descend. At first, the descent is gentle, but after the gate, the road gets steeper as it enters the forest again. There are a few red benches along the road on your way down, where you can stop for a break and enjoy the views.

When you get to the road junction with yellow signs, follow the signs towards Dovre. Continue down to Dovre Church and make sure to follow the road as it takes a sharp right turn. This takes you down to main road E6 where you take a right and follow the cycle path for 400 meters until you reach Toftemo.

Faktaopplysninger

  • There are several cultural heritage sites throughout Grimsdalen Valley. These are marked with brown signs with a white cross.
  • Having descended the hill, about 280 meters after passing the junction where you turn off to Dovre, you will reach St Olav’s Well (see map for location). The water from the well was said to have a healing effect on children. Pilgrims on their way to Trondheim used to drink from the well, hoping that the holy water would give them the strength they needed to complete the journey across the mountain plateau. So, if you need a little extra energy for the final bit, this is the place to fill up your water bottle.

Fasiliteter

  • There are no public toilets available between the start and the end of this adventure.
  • You will have access to drinking water most of the day. In addition to the St Olav's well, you can fill up your water bottle from the river running through Grimsdalen Valley, and at the mountain plateau, you can get water from the small lakes.
