Om Trolltun to Furuhaugli
The first stage of Tour de Dovre Cycle Route takes you from the center of Dombås up to Furuhaugli at the Dovre Mountain Plateau, situated some 1,000 meters above sea level. This first stretch allows you to experience the rounded peaks, wide plains, and moorlands typical of the southeastern area of Dovre. Having arrived at the staffed lodge Furuhaugli, treat yourself to traditional, locally sourced food and beer from Norway’s tiniest brewery.
The first 3.5 kilometers run uphill along a somewhat bumpy forest road. Once you reach the top, however, the landscape opens up and flattens out. You will soon reach a graveled road taking you through easy-going terrain to Furuhaugli.
There are several daily train connections between Oslo and Dombås as well as between Trondheim and Dombås. If you travel by train, double check that the train allows bikes onboard. Alternatively, you can rent a bike (regular or electric) at Dombås.
Nor-way bus drives to Dombås from Trondheim and Bergen, while the company drives to Dombås from Oslo and Trondheim.
If you go by car from Oslo, you can follow the road E6 north and it will take you about 4,5 hours to reach Dombås. From Trondheim it's approximately 3 hours on the road E6 heading south. While from Bergen it takes from 8 to 9 hours depending on which road you take.
From Trolltun follow the gravel road going past the lift to the alpine slopes. The first 3.5 kilometers goes along a bumpy forest road taking you up 190 meters in elevation. As you climb higher, the landscape opens up, and you get excellent views of Dovre National Park, with Snøhetta on your left-hand side.
About 4.3 kilometers after leaving Trolltun you will reach a gate at Hyndyrju Bridge. The road gets better as it turns into a gravel road taking you through flat terrain to Furuhaugli. Follow the road for 4.2 kilometers after the bridge, passing 3 information boards where you can read more about Fokstugu Nature Reserve. See more info on Fokstugu below in the Facts section.
From the information boards, you have 6.8 kilometers left until you reach Furuhaugli.
- Fokstugu Landscape Protection Area covers a total of 72.3 square kilometers, including Fokstumyra Nature Reserve. Established in 1923, this was the first nature reserve in Norway. It comprises 18 square kilometers of wetlands and is known for its bird fauna and plant diversity. Cycling past this area, you will have the chance to see rare or threatened species.

In addition to housing Norway’s tiniest brewery and a restaurant serving excellent locally sourced food, Furuhaugli offers cabin, camping and hotel accommodation. The hotel arranges musk ox safaris with authorized guides, which you can book in advance through their website.
