Om Binnhovdknatten

The trail to Binnhovdknatten (1,165 m.a.s.l.) takes you through forests and agricultural landscapes, passing several lakes along the way. Having crossed the treeline, breathtaking views of Jotunheimen National Park await.

The hardest part is the 150-meter ascent to the peak. Except for this steep ascent, this is an easy-going hike, alternating between mountain trails and graveled roads.

Exit road E16 in Aurdal right by the church towards Danebu Kongsgård and Valdres Alpine ski slopes. Continue up the road passing the exit to the ski slopes and continue all the way to a toll booth where you need to pay NOK 20 by credit card to pass.

Continue up the road, passing Damtjernet Lake on your left-hand side. After a few hundred meters take a right at the sign towards Danebu Kongsgård.

From Danebu follow the gravel road and take a right at the first junction after the parking lot. Go past the football field, take a left at Varpadalsvegen and then immediately after, a right on Danebuvegen.

Follow Danebuvegen for 150 meters and look for signs towards Fjellenden and Binnhovdsknatten. The trail goes into the forest on the right side of a small creek.

After 400 meters you get to Fræningen Lake. Follow this trail over to the northern end of the lake. There is a trail junction here where one trail takes you to Binnhovdsknatten and the other to Fjellenden. Follow the trail towards Binnhovdsknatten, taking you through the luscious Fjellstøldalen Valley. On your way, you will get glimpses of Jotunheimen National Park, and after 350 meters you get to Nystølen. Look for a yellow house on a meadow. Follow the fence to the other side of the meadow where a gravel road starts.

Continue on this gravel road until it meets another larger gravel road where you take a right. This gravel road takes you along Engetjernet Lake, and this is a good place to fill up your drinking bottle.

By the end of the lake, the road forks and you again take a right. After 270 meters take a left onto Skålemyrvegen. Follow this road straight ahead when you get to the brown-colored house with white windows. At the next junction, take a right where the road gently ascends instead of following the road down to the left. Follow this road to the end and continue on the trail at the end of the road.

You will now start to ascend fast at you are hiking up 150 elevation meters. After leaving the forest behind the trail flattens out and you can see Binnhovdknatten in the north-western direction.

From Binnhovdknatten follow the trail back from where you came from. When you get down to the main trail junction, take the right trail down towards Kritetjernet Lake. The trail goes down into the forest again and 700 meters after the lake you reach another gravel road. Follow this road around Engetjernet Lake and back to where you came from hiking down the Fjellstøldalen Valley, and then follow the same roads and trails back to Danebu Kongsgaard.

  • If you are interested in local food and beer then go by Noraker Gard and Små Vesen before or after the hike. Noraker Gard is known for its production of fermented fish which they sell in the farm shop. Små Vesen sells its excellent locally produced beer.
  • Fræningen Lake is drinking water so swimming is strictly forbidden
  • You can fill up your water bottle in the lakes and creeks along the way.

Right by the trailhead, you will find the historic Danebu Kongsgård hotel.
