Om Tenlefjorden Lake
This round-trip hike takes you from birch forests to an untouched mountain landscape. This is an area with rich animal life, so you might spot reindeer or grouse. Tenlefjorden Lake is excellent for fishing, so remember to bring your fishing rod and buy a permit if you want to try your luck.
Rounding the mountainside of Børrenøse, the trail reaches an elevation of 1,200 meters above sea level. Here excellent views of Jotunheimen await, with the pointed peak of Uranostind (2,157 m.a.s.l.) rising towards the air like an arrow.
The trail is well-marked and easy to follow all the way. The most challenging part is the descent from the mountainside of Børrenøse to the trailhead at Filefjellstuene.
This trail is located by Tyinkrysset along road E16. This is the main road between Oslo and Bergen and it takes about 4 hours from both cities driving up to Tyinkrysset.
The nearest bus stop is "Tyinkrysset" along road E16. Getting there by bus from Oslo or from Bergen takes about 5 hours. From the bus stop follow Nystøgovegen road for 1 kilometer until you reach the start of the trail.
You can buy a ticket for the bus from NOR-WAY Bus Express.
Start from Filefjellstuene and follow the road towards the main road. Cross the bridge, and after 60 meters, take a left onto "Kongevegen." Kongevegen is a wide trail, and you will find a sign there with a blue hiker and the Kongevegen icon.
Continue on this trail for 1.2 kilometers until you reach the main road. You should see a big blue sign saying "Tyinkrysset 0.4 - 1 km." On the other side of the road, look for a wooden tree post, marked with a blue hiker. Follow this trail as it climbs up a small hill. At the top of the hill, you will find a classic Norwegian outhouse toilet with a picture of the royal family on the wall.
Continue past the outhouse and also past some cabins. There is a red cabin there which might feel a bit strange to hike past as it's so close to the Kongevegen trail, but rest assure that you are on the right track. Getting past the cabin, you get to the parking lot by the road where the trail up to Skørsnøse starts.
Continue along the road until you reach a power pole on the right side of the road where the trail continues. After 300 meters follow the trail on the other side of the road which leads you across the Begna river and towards the slopes at Filefjell Alpinsenter. Go past the first lift, follow the road Børrenøsvegen and continue on Gamlestøgovegen which is a fairly wide gravel road going along Otrøvatnet Lake.
Continue along the road, passing Raude Sandadn where you will find a sign at the start of a nature trail. Go past Raude Sandadn for 900 meters, and you will get to a trail junction just before crossing the river. This is where Pilgrimsleden trail is coming down from the mountain. Take a left here and follow the Pilgrimsleden trail.
The trail is now marked with white V's up towards Tenlefjorden. 1.7 kilometers after starting hiking the Pilgrimsleden trail you get to another trail junction where you should continue straight ahead on the trail marked with wooden poles. The trail to the left goes up to Børrenøse, while the trail to the right takes you across Tenla river. Follow the trail with the wooden poles, and after 500 meters you reach Tenlefjorden Lake.
After another 350 meters, you get to Terningen, a big rock painted with dots to make it look like a dice. The trail follows the lake all the way over to the Tenlefjord cabin.
From the cabin, stop following the trail with the wooden poles, but find the trail going straight north instead. This trail is marked with cairns. After 1 kilometer you meet up with the trail coming down from Børrenøse. You have now reached the highest elevation, and the trail now descends back to Filefjellstuene.
