If you’re looking for a short, family-friendly hike with great views, the trail running from Putten Seter to Utsikten is an excellent choice. “Utsikt” means “view” in Norwegian, and as the name suggests, splendid views await once you’ve reached your destination. Spread out before you are the green hillsides of Gudbrandsalen Valley, a patchwork of fields and the impressive Gudbrandsdalslågen River.
While driving along the main road E6 in the Gudbrandsdalen Valley look for the sign to Høvringen about a 15-minute drive north of Otta. From the main road, there is a six kilometer drive up to a fork in the road just before you reach Høvringen. Bear right at this junction and after 1.5 kilometers look for a sign to Putten Seter on the right side of the road.
After turning off to the right you get to the toll booth for driving the road to Putten Seter. Follow this road for five kilometers until you reach Putten Seter.
Take the train from Oslo or Trondheim to Otta. From Otta there is a local bus going up to Høvringen. Note that this bus does not go all the way to Putten Seter so you either need to hike your way to Putten Seter from Høvringen or ask for private transport.
The trail starts at Putten Seter. Look for a sign saying "Utsikten 1.25 km" at the backside of the brown cabin in front of the main entrance. Follow the trail behind the cabin and out on the grassy meadow behind it. The trail follows the power lines and at the end of the meadow, you need to climb some steps to get across the fence.
Follow the road past some cabins and soon you will find a sign saying "Utsikten 0.2 km". Follow the trail which now takes you through a forest with a mix of pine and birch trees. Soon after you will reach Utsikten with great views of the Gudbrandsdalen Valley.
