Om Karihaugen Loop
This roundtrip-hike from Putten Seter to Karihaugen grants you breathtaking views of highlights such as Snøhetta, as well as Rondane and Jotunheimen national parks. The trail leads you through a varied landscape of forests and moorlands, passing the three Harrtjønnin lakes which are excellent for fishing. For stunning views of Gudbrandsdalen Valley, take the detour to the cliff at Kluftåthaugen on your way back to Putten Seter.
Apart from the rugged and rocky stretch to the top of Karihaugen, the trail is relatively easy to follow. There are no particularly steep sections except for the trail descending Anarpiggen Mountain on the western side. If you wish to avoid this steep section, there is an alternative trail running down on the southwestern side of the mountain.
While driving along the main road E6 in the Gudbrandsdalen valley look for the sign to Høvringen about a 15-minute drive north of Otta. From the main road, there is a 6-kilometer drive up to a fork in the road just before you reach Høvringen. Bear right at this junction and after 1.5 kilometers look for a sign to Putten Seter on the right side of the road.
After turning off to the right you get to the toll booth for driving the road to Putten Seter. Follow this road for five kilometers until you reach Putten Seter.
Take the train from Oslo or Trondheim to Otta. From Otta, there is a local bus going up to Høvringen. Note that this bus does not go all the way to Putten Seter so you either need to hike your way to Putten Seter from Høvringen or ask for private transport.
After exiting the gates at Putten Seter follow the trail below the power lines. You will see signs for Karihaugen and Anaripigg pointing you in the right direction. The trails start by taking you through a birch forest. When you start leaving the birch forest behind you will find a small hill on your right-hand side. On top of this hill, you will have great views of the Rondane mountains.
After hiking 1.7 kilometers the trail splits in two. Take the left-hand side trail with signs pointing you towards Anaripigg and Karihaugen. The trail up to Karihaugen is now more rugged and rocky.
Continue on the trail for another 1 kilometer and you get to Anaripiggen. This part of the trail is easy with fewer rocks and with nice views all along trail towards the Rondane mountains, Jotunheimen NP and Snøhetta.
There is a bench just before Anaripiggen which is a great place for lunch. From the top of Anaripiggen, the trail descends steeply on the western side. If you wish to avoid this steep descent, head back the same way you came and take the trail descending Anarpiggen on the southwestern side.
Follow the trail down towards Harrtjern Lake and when you get to the lake you can choose to take two different routes back to Putten Seter. The shorter route is signed 2.3 kilometers to Putten Seter and takes you straight back to the cabin. The longer one (3.7 kilometers) takes you by Kluftåthaugen where you get some nice views of the Gudbrandsdalen valley. The longer route is well worth the extra 1.5 kilometers of hiking.
From Kluftåthaugen follow the trail back to Putten Seter through the birch forest.
- Make sure to fill up your water bottle before you go. You can drink the water from the lakes along the trail, but between Putten and the lakes, there are usually no creeks where you can fill up your bottle.
