Om Flikja to Syndinstøga
The fourth stage of Stølsruta Historical Hiking Route continues to the northern edge of Movaten Lake, before traveling gradually uphill in the direction of Gilafjellet Mountain. You’ll experience expansive views as you take a detour by following a trail running along the mountainside of Gilafjellet. The trail continues northwards and downhill along Riståne River in the direction of Midtre and Nordre Syndin Lakes. The final stretch towards Syndinstøga is idyllic, with small summer mountain farms scattered along the lakeshores.
Except for the detour along the mountainside of Gilafjellet, this leg runs along summer mountain farm roads that are easy to walk. The rugged trail along the mountainside can be avoided by simply following the main road all the way from Movaten Lake to Syndinstøga. However, the astonishing views do make the detour worth the effort.
From Fagernes, take Road E16 west and northwards and drive 32.6 kilometers. Before reaching Ryfoss, turn left onto Vestsidevegen by following the signs towards Syndin-Strø. After 1 kilometer, turn right by following the signs towards Riste. Continue 1 kilometer before turning left by Kjeldeskogen Cottage. Drive straight ahead for 9 kilometers.
Continue onto Strøsvegen and drive for another 9.2 kilometers, keeping to the right where the road intersects with Svultavegen. At the next crossroads, turn left onto Kvitehaugvegen. Having driven some 850 meters, turn left onto Kjeslarånvegen. Continue for 1 kilometer and Flikja will be on your right.
A note on the markings along the route: as the route runs through a varied landscape you’ll find different markings along the way. Look for poles with the Historical Hiking Route pictogram, signs, cairns as well as red markings on trees and stones.
From Flikja, continue northwards on the summer mountain farm road running alongside Movaten Lake. Reaching the crossroads at Kvitehaugen, take to the right in the direction of Strø. The road travels gradually uphill through an open landscape with Nøsakampen Mountain straight ahead.
Continue on the road for some 3 kilometers, before following the markings leading onto a trail to the left. This path runs along the mountainside of Gilafjellet. Take in the expansive views of the surrounding mountains and plains as the trail reaches an elevation of 1,150 meters above sea level, extending as far as the Jotunheimen mountains in the north.
Follow the markings northwards in the direction of Riståne River. The trail isn’t well-marked and can be hard to spot at times, so be sure to follow the map carefully. Watch out for slippery stones and muddy areas. The trail travels downhill along Riståne River towards Teigostølen. Having reached Teigostølen, follow the markings to the left guiding you alongside a fence. The trail continues in the direction of Bakkeåne River where you cross.
Follow the tractor road to the right until you reach the summer mountain farm road, which takes you to Syndinstøga. Having crossed the bridge over Pyttingen Inlet, keep to the left. Syndinstøga is located on the top of the little hill on the right side of the road, some 1.6 kilometers after you’ve crossed the bridge.
Alternative RouteIf you want to avoid the scenic, but somewhat rugged trail along the mountainside of Gilafjellet, it is possible to follow the summer mountain farm road all the way from the crossroads at Kvitehaugen to Syndinstøga. It’s an 11.5 kilometer-long hike along the road.
- This is the fourth of five stages of Stølsruta Historical Route. You can choose to hike the entire route or hike individual stages separately.
Be sure to wear waterproof footwear as the trail along the mountainside of Gilafjellet can be wet.
- Bring water as it’s far from Movaten to the first decent water source, Riståne River.
- Bring a towel and a swimsuit if you wish to take a refreshing dip Movaten (there’s a nice beach by Kvitehaugen) or Midtre Syndin Lake.
- There's a grocery store available at Syndinstøga.
