Enjoy a roundtrip hike featuring lush mountain flora and quiet lakes

This roundtrip hike to Melbyfjellet via Knausehøgdi and Sørre Knausen Mountains awards you stunning views of Jotunheimen and Langsua National Parks. The hike features lush mountain flora, several viewpoints and Tutjernet Lake where, if weather permitting, it’s nice to take a swim.Many of the trails around Beitostølen result from the tracks made by livestock going to and fro the old summer mountain farms (“støl” is a term for a mountain farm used in summer). The most demanding part of the hike is the ascent from Tutjernet Lake to the top of Melbyfjellet, otherwise, the trail leads you through relatively smooth mountain terrain.
From Fagernes, take NOR-WAY 161 Valdresekspressen or the local route 137 and alight at Beitostølen. Walk some 100 meters along the road and you’ll reach the trailhead at the bottom of Bjødnabakken, on your right-hand side when coming in the direction of Fagernes.
CarFrom Fagernes, follow the signs to Road 51 towards Vågå/Beitostølen. Drive on Road 51 for about 40 kilometers until you reach Beitostølen. Find parking in the center of Beitostølen. Beitostølvegen Parking is an alternative which is close to the trailhead at the bottom of Bjødnabakken.
The trail has red markings and numbered checkpoints.
The trail starts at the bottom of Bjødnabakken. Follow the gravel road that travels between the bobsled and pushmobile runs up to the top of the hill. If you want to take a shortcut, the ski-lift operates also in summer.
Having reached the top of the hill, there’s both a graveled path for cyclists and a hiking trail. Follow the latter to avoid cyclists coming towards you at top speed. When you reach checkpoint no. 52, follow the signs towards Knausehøgda.
Once you’ve ascended the little hill, you’ll see straight towards Bitihorn, while Knausehøgdi and Nørdre Knausen are the mountains to your right. Follow the trail that runs between Knausehøgdi and Nørdre Knausen. The trail takes you through a forest of birch, between scrubs of juniper and willow. Alternatively, you can hike the trail that travels along the western side of Knausehøgdi, before rounding the peak on the northern side (via checkpoint no. 37).
At the top of Knausehøgdi, you’ll have a panoramic view of Jotunheimen and Langsua National Parks. To descend, follow the trail that leads over the ridge of Nørdre Knausen (via checkpoint nr. 33) and to the top of the ski lift at Sørre Knausesn (checkpoint no. 32).
Continue towards checkpoint no. 25 where the trail splits in three. Take the trail to the left. The trail leads you northwards some 300 meters before turning to the right, in the direction of Tutjernkampen Mountain (checkpoint no. 34). The trail takes you down from Tutjernkampen to Tutjernet Lake, where it’s nice to take a swim.
From Tutjernet Lake, it’s recommended to round Melbyfjellet Mountain from the northern side. The first part of the ascent is steep, so watch your step. Once at the top, you're awarded stunning views of Olevatnet Lake. Descend on the southern side.
Once you’re back at Tutjernet Lake, follow the marked trail that runs past checkpoints no. 22, 21 and 20. There’s a nice viewpoint by checkpoint no. 20 where you can relax while enjoying the view of Beitostølen. Continue on the trail as it takes you in the direction of Bitihorn Mountain and checkpoint no. 28.
From checkpoint no. 28, continue towards checkpoint no. 7. Between checkpoints no. 7 and 8 there’s a viewpoint where you can take a break before descending the final kilometer to Beitostølen via checkpoints no. 6 and 5.
Bring water. From the trailhead, there are about 4,5 kilometers to the first decent water source, Tutjernet Lake.
If the weather’s nice, bring a towel and a swimsuit so you can take a refreshing swim in Tutjernet Lake.
