Storebjørn is the most majestic and tallest mountain in the Smørstabbtind massif, towering at 2,222 meters above sea level.
This demanding mountain is a true classic in Norway for both skiing and hiking. The most popular route is over Bjørnbrean, which has large cracks in several directions.
Its name derives from its appearance at the top, a big bear.
Road 55 (Sognefjellsvegen) does not open until approximately 1 May, when the cabin is fully serviced. During this time, you can book a shuttle from Rustad Sæter.
The road to Krossbu Turiststasjon, Road 55 (Sognefjellsveien) opens around 1 May.
This trip begins at Krossbu Turiststasjon. From the parking lot, below the cabin, ski towards Bøverbrean before the glacier flares out on the left side. You'll then ski past Kalven, Skeie, and Veslebjørn.
When skiing between Veslebjørn and Storebjørn keep to the right as much as possible, to avoid the steep slope from the glacier. Upon reaching the base of Storebjørn, hike on the left side of the marker. The final 50 meters before summiting the peak are very steep, however, the difficulty depends on how much snow and the current conditions.
It's important to note that this is just one of many skiing possibilities to summit Storebjørn.
