Om Vardefjellet

Vardefjellet is located at the edge of the Norddalsfjord, directly across from Eidsdal. The clear and well-marked trail to the top of the mountain leads through an old mountain farm and across typical mountain terrain.

Although there are taller mountains in the vicinity, Vardefjellet’s position provides the perfect viewpoint to take in the surrounding fjords and peaks. Many of the tallest mountains in the area are visible from Vardefjellet.

The Vardefjellet trailhead is a 5–10 minute drive from Valldal centre. From the center, follow the signs towards Geiranger. As you head west, keep an eye out for a small yellow sign to Lingås and turn right.

Follow the road to Lingås, the last farm. Drive past the barn and park in the marked area.

If you want a shorter hike (and less uphill) you can drive all the way up to Klovset. It’s 2.4 kilometers further along to the end of the steep road and there is a 50 NOK fee to use the road.

The route to Vardefjellet is clear and well-marked with red “V” symbols, posts, and signs.

The trail begins on the western side of the barn and leads straight up into the forest. Hiking up, you will cross the road and then continue west, eventually meeting the upper parking lot.

After 200 meters you will arrive at Klovset. Here there is a plateau and buildings from when it was a mountain farm. There are about a dozen buildings, some around 120 years old. Easy to reach and with such a relaxing placement, Klovset is a popular destination for locals after some fresh air.

From the upper side of Klovset, the trail continues up and into the woods. After a steady climb the trail rises above the treeline. When there are forks in the trail, keep to the left. There are wide views over the fjords and surrounding mountains.

The trail now heads westward and continues gradually up towards Vardevatnet Lake. Keep along the lower shore of the lake. From there it’s just 500 meters further up to the Vardefjellet.

Return along the same route.

Vardefjellet means “beacon mountain”. The Vikings would light fires here to warn people in the villages below about enemy attacks.
