Om Bygdin - Torfinnsbu
The trail from Bygdin Lake to the DNT cabin Torfinnsbu runs through relatively smooth mountain terrain. Let your eyes rest on the clear blue mountain lake while you walk through this uncultivated landscape where sheep graze. You’ll pass tiny fishing huts owned by farmers along the way. This hike can be combined with a cruise on Bygdin, either on your way to or on your way home from Torfinnsbu.
You'll cross several rivers, and you should take this hike in summer when seasonal bridges are provided. Although the trail is mostly dry, there are some wet parts, so be sure to wear waterproof shoes.
The trail starts from Bygdin Høyfjellshotell, which is easily visible when you alight from the bus.
Note: buses between Beitostølen and Leirvassbu (Lom) only operate in summer, approximately from late June through August.
From Oslo, head north on Road E16 towards Bergen for 185 kilometers. When you reach Fagernes, follow the signs to Road 51 towards Vågå/Beitostølen. Drive on Road 51 for about 40 kilometers until you reach Beitostølen.
Continue past Beitostølen for about 12 kilometers until you reach Bygdin Høyfjellshotell (Bygdin Mountain Resort) on your right. Here you can park your car.
Note: Parts of Road 51 (between Garli and Maurvangen) is closed during winter and typically open from April to December.
From Bygdin Høyfjellshotell, hike 3 kilometers along the road closed to cars that leads to Old Bygdisheim hotel. From here, there’s a marked trail through relatively smooth terrain along Bygdin Lake. Head westwards along the lake and cross the seasonal bridge over Breidløypa River.
When the trail splits in two, continue westwards (the trail heading northeastwards leads to Valdresflye Vandrerhjem, a closed cabin). You’ll cross another seasonal bridge over Hestevollåne River. From here, the trail continues a bit further up from the lake. Note that the trail is changed and is now located further up from Bygdin Lake than before. The route may thus deviate from the route shown on some printed maps.
Follow the trail westwards reaching some 1,100 meters to Torfinnsdøla River, where you cross by walking over a bridge located some distance above Torfinnsbu Cabin. There’s also a seasonal bridge just above Bygdin Lake, close to the Bygdin Boat dock.
Head back by following the same trail, or take the boat back to Bygdin.
Torfinnsbu is a self-service DNT cabin that is open between February 15 to October 15. The cabin has everything you need for cooking, however, you do need to bring a sleeping bag if planning on staying overnight.
