The hike to Stabbeskaret takes you from Trollstigen Viewpoint right to the edge of Trollveggen. Stabbeskaret is the gorge between the peaks of Semletind and Stabben.
The trek is not for the faint of heart, taking you up close to the sharp Trolltindene peaks with their vertical drop down into the Romsdalen Valley.
Park in the large car park by the Trollstigen Viewpoint.
The trail is fairly clear and marked. While the trail itself is not exposed, the end of the route very much is, so take care. The first part of the trail is dirt and then it becomes rocky.
From the car park, walk past the visitor center and towards the viewpoints. Continue along the concrete walkway which follows the edge of the mountain. Look for the signposted trail that trail leads up and to the right from the walkway.
Join the trail and you’ll arrive a short, steep section with chains to help you up. This leads to a plateau and the trail continues on towards the river that leads out of the valley opposite Trollstigen and Bispen mountain.
Continuing to the right of the river, the trail climbs steeply under Stigbotthornet Mountain. The path then crosses to the other side of the valley. The trail flattens out briefly before a steep climb up and over a scree covered ridge.
The trail flattens out again, and you’ll get your first views of the Trolltindene peaks. Pass by three small lakes and then finally up to Stabbeskaret for those well-deserved views of the Romsdalen Valley.
- Sturdy hiking shoes or boots are recommended due to the rocky terrain
