Om Horseid Beach

Horseid Beach (Horseidstranda) is one of the many beautiful white sandy beaches in Lofoten. Horseid Beach is similar to the more famous Bunes Beach, but a bit more remote and usually less visited. If you are hiking with kids, the hike to Bunes Beach is shorter and a better choice.

This hike is quite easy and can be done even when the weather is not perfect. It begins with a ferry ride to the start of the trail in the very northern end of the Reinefjord. The boat ride itself is amazing on a clear day with views of the many mountains surrounding the fjord.

Veibeskrivelse

The trailhead is in Kjerkfjorden, a 15 minute ferry ride away from Reine. The ferry has multiple daily departures. Check the timetable for specific times.

There is a free parking lot by the entrance to Reine.

The Lofotenekspressen bus stops in Reine. This bus line runs the length of the islands from Narvik to Å along route E10. Travel Pass Nordland allows for unlimited travel for seven days on buses and express boats in Lofoten, as well as in Vesterålen and further south in Bodø and Helgeland. The ferry to Kjerkfjorden is included in the pass.

Turbeskrivelse

From the pier at Kjerkfjorden take a right onto the gravel road. Walk for about 100 meters past the houses along the road and you should see a small stream coming down the mountain on your left-hand side. Immediately after this stream, take a left up the trail and leave the gravel road.

The trail now climbs up almost 200 meters to the pass reaching out towards the beach. Enjoy the views from the pass before heading down the other side. You will come to a grassy meadow that stretches from the foot of the pass all the way out to the sandy beach.

Continue through the meadow, passing two ponds on the left-hand side of the trail. Once you reach the sandy beach it is about 1 kilometer until you come to the water’s edge.

Alternative route
You can also get to Horseid Beach from the northern side by Selfjordhytta cabin. From Fredvang, follow the road south along the Selfjord to the cabin. The cabin is maintained by The Norwegian Trekking Association and you can stay there overnight. Get the key at the tourist information office in Flakstad. More information about the cabin is only available in Norwegian

From the cabin, follow the trail up to Fageråvatnet Lake and then up to the pass between the peaks of Markan and Kråkhammartinden. From the pass you can see the beach and the grassy meadow. Follow the trail down the mountain to get there. Note that this route is considerably tougher with 18 kilometers out and back. Expect to use around 7–8 hours on the entire hike.
