Om Canyon Trail

This trail follows the same trail as the Pu'u Hinahina trail, but instead of going up the lookout this trails takes you to the start of the Waipo'o waterfall. Along the trail, you get to experience some great views of Waimea Canyon.

From Lihue, take Kaumualii Highway 50 to Waimea. Turn right and enter Waimea Canyon Drive. Drive to Niihau and Pu’u Hinahina Lookout and park your car there.

On the island, it is wise to rent a car. The public bus does not run often and drives only between the larger towns on the highway.

From the parking lot, you will find the two lookouts on the right and the start of the trail on the left. The trail takes you deeper into the rainforest. The first 300 meters the trail is descending a bit before it starts ascending and sometimes you have to make big steps over the tree roots.

Just before the end of the Pu'u Hinahina trail take a left along Canyon Trail. You will hike 50 meters down and meet another junction, where you want to take a right. Continue along the trail which now soon follows a ridge with beautiful views of the rainforest on the left and the abyss with a magnificent view over the Canyon valley.

When you start hiking down, you are almost at the start of the waterfall.  There is a swimming hole at the end of the trail where you can go for a swim.

  • Drinking water can be found by the parking lot.
  • You can swim in the waterfall pool, so make sure you bring your swimsuit.

  • There no public toilets along the trail. You can use the ones at the parking lot next to the Pu’u Hinahina Lookout.
  • There are campsites in the State Park, but you can also camp at Salt Pond Beachpark
  • You will find shops along Kaumualii Highway and in Kalaheo and Port Allen.

You can choose from one of the many hotels on Kauai. The island is not big, the maximum distance you can travel is two hours, one way.

The island also has several camping sites. The closest ones can be found around the State Park and Salt Pond Beachpark. You need to obtain a permit in Linue to stay at these campsites.
