Om Shipwreck Beach
This trail starts at Shipwreck Beach and takes you over low cliffs along the sea, with spectacular views. The water is so clear that you can see the fish swimming in it.
From Lihue, take Kaumualii Highway 50 until the junction to Koloa, turn left to Maluhia road. Then take the second exit on the left onto the Ala Kinoiki Way. At the junction, turn left onto the Poipu Road. After the parking area of the Grand Hyatt hotel, turn right. The parking place is at the end of this road.
The trail is not marked in the beginning, but you can easily follow the trail. The trail starts on the left if you enter the beach.
On the island, it is wise to rent a car. The public bus does not run often and drives only between the larger towns on the highway.
When you reach Shipwrecks Beach, you immediately see a trail on the left that runs through the woods. Climb up along the trail and walk to the right until you get to the sea. You have a beautiful view of the adjacent beaches and hotels. Follow the trail to the left, following the trail over the cliffs along the sea. Along the way, you will encounter various sand and rock formations.
- Make sure to fill up on drinking water at the parking lot
- There are no public toilets along the trail, you have to use the ones next to the parking lot.
- There are campsites in the State Park, but you can also camp at Salt Pond Beachpark.
- You will find shops along Kaumualii Highway, in Koloa and Omao.
You can choose from one of the many hotels on Kauai. The island is not big, the maximum distance you can travel is two hours, one way.
The island also has several camping sites. The closest ones can be found around the State Park and Salt Pond Beachpark. You need to obtain a permit in Linue to stay at these campsites.
