Sognsvann Lake, situated just north of downtown Oslo, is a great starting point for any adventure into the forest on skis. You can go for a short trip around the tracked trails near the lake or you can follow this fun challenge to Ullevålseter.
From downtown Oslo, take the westbound line 5 - Sognsvann to the final stop, "Sognsvann". From the station, walk north, along the left side of the parking lot. You will pass a gate and when you reach a kiosk on your left, the ski tracks start to your right.
If you are driving to Sognsvann, follow directions to the large, free public parking lot next to Sogsvann Lake.
The trail from Sognsvann to Ullevåseter is a nice track and achievable for skiers of all levels. It is a steady climb from start to finish and you will earn that kanelbolle (cinnamon bun) which is waiting for you at the cabin.
The trail will take you along the eastern side of Sognsvann above the walking trail. The first kilometer of the trail will provide nice views of the lake and surrounding forest and you head north.
Once you leave the lake area the trail begins a steady climb for the next 2.5 kilometers. You will then ski along the east side of the lake Store Åklungen.
At the end of the lake, you will come to a crossing with a variety of directions you can go. If Ullevålseter is your goal, you have only a few hundred meters to go but it will require a bit of a climb at first. Once you reach the top of steep hill, you will soon see Ullevåseter cabin.
If you want to take an alternate route back to the city, we recommend following the trail from Ullevålseter to Frognerseteren. Follow the map, in the opposite direction, for Outtt's skiing adventure: Frognerseteren to Ullevåseter.
Ullevålseter is one of the larger cabins in Nordmarka. The cabin is open Tuesdays to Fridays from 9:00 to 21:00 and Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 to 17:00 and closed on Mondays.
During the open hours, Ullevålseter serves warm and cold beverages, waffles, home-baked goods (delicious cinnamon buns!), sandwiches, cakes, and normal kiosk goods.
