Om Åndervatnet Lake

A hike to Åndervatnet lake takes you into the heart of Ånderdalen National Park, Senja’s only national park. The idyllic, untouched nature features birch and pine forests, and offers quite a unique experience when compared with other hikes on Senja.

The trail is rather flat and is suitable for all ages. There are marshy areas, so wear waterproof footwear to keep your feet dry. If you have the time, make this an overnight trip and stay in one of the small public cabins or wild camp. At the lake, fish for trout, but buy a fishing license before the trip.

Veibeskrivelse

The hike begins from the public parking lot across from Norwegian Wild campground, along road 860 on the southern coast of Senja.

Turbeskrivelse

The trail is a mixture of dirt tracks and wooden boardwalks. Overall the trail is quite flat and enjoyable to walk. Some sections can be muddy and might require some minor detours to avoid getting wet feet.

The trail begins outside of the national park and finishes close to the center. It takes roughly 1.5–2 hours to hike to the lake. At around halfway there is a simple rest area and a small creek to refill water. This can make a nice destination if you’re after a shorter hike.

While not always well-marked, the trail is quite clear. After entering the national park the trail markings become much better.

At the end of the trail by the lakeshore there is a picnic bench and outhouse, as well as a small public cabin. There are plenty of possibilities for wild camping.

Alternative trail

After about 4 kilometers, there is a fork in the trail. Follow it to the left to walk alongside the Ånderelva river. The trails meet at the end by the lake.

Overnattingsmuligheter

By the lake is a small cabin with three beds, a wood stove, and cooking facilities. The cabin is open to the public and free to use. You can stay a maximum of one night before making way for other guests. There is a woodshed with wood available, as you are not allowed to chop down trees.

A further option is to follow the signs to Åndergammen from the lake, about a 1.2 kilometer hike. Åndergammen is a restored traditional Sami hut. The cabin is more basic, but has space for two to sleep comfortably (bring a mattress or sleeping pad) and a wood stove. There is a woodshed and outhouse.
