Om Åndervatnet

On your hike to Ånderdalsvatnet (Ånderdal Lake), you will find lots of idyllic untouched nature including pine forests that transition into birch forest, and marshes. Upon arriving at the lake, fish for trout, but make sure you order a fishing license before the trip.

The trail is rather flat and is suitable for all ages. There are marshy areas, so make sure you wear waterproof boots to keep your feet dry. If you have the time, make this an overnight trip, as there are several nice picnic areas with bonfire pits. Once you reach the water there is an outhouse.

The hike is located in Ånderdalen National Park on Senja, Norway’s second largest island. On the island, it is a short distance from big mountain peaks, fjord and coastal landscapes, and even old pine and birch forests. It is truly a miniature Norway packed into a beautiful gem of an island. It has everything an open-air enthusiast can wish for!

Veibeskrivelse

The trail begins and ends at the public parking lot across from Tranøybotn Camping. Travel by car from Finnsnes to Senja on road 86. After about 4.5 km turn left onto road 860 (also called Stonglandseidet). Follow the road for about 23.5 km, and the public parking lot is on the right side of the road.

Stibeskrivelse

The first 3 km of terrain are very flat. After that, the path becomes a bit more hilly and is surrounded by lots of marshes. The trip is well marked and signposted all the way. There are a few places where the trail divides, only follow red marked trees, these lead you to Åndervatnet.

It will take roughly 1.5 hours to hike to the lake, once you have around 30 minutes left, you will see a signpost for Ånderelva. At the second intersection, before the lake you will have the option to turn left and walk along the river. If you would not like to take this small detour, continue straight on the path towards the lake.

Overnattingsmuligheter

Tranøybotn Camping is the gateway to Ånderdalen National Park and offers cabins, a place for caravans, and ample camping spots that overlook the fjord.

Near the lake, there is a little cabin with two beds and a wood stove owned by Statskog and open to the public. There is a woodshed that you can collect wood from, as you are not allowed to chop down trees.

Another option is following the signs to Åndergammen from the lake, about a 1.2 km hike. Åndergammen is a traditional Sami house. Here you will find a wood burning stove, with a woodshed outside all open to the public. It´s also possible to sleep over, but you should bring your own sleeping pad.
