Om Segla

Segla is Senja’s most popular hike. A steep trail leads up the southern side of the mountain to the peak 639 meters above the ocean below. At the top, there are wonderful views of Mefjord and the surrounding mountains. The sheer western cliff will give an adrenaline kick to anyone game enough to peer over the edge.

The trail is steep but does not have a lot of exposure, just stay to the right as your climb up the mountain. Be aware of rocks loosened by other hikers above you. The top can feel a bit scary if you have a fear of highs, particularly when it’s crowded. Try an evening hike to watch the sunset and you might even get the peak to yourself, for a little while at least.

Due to Segla’s popularity the trail has become very worn. While the view is very nice, the hike itself is not that exciting and the peak can be busy. For an alternative trail that still has amazing (and arguably better) views, consider some of the nearby trails which are popular with locals, such as Barden and Keipen.

Avoid this hike in wet and windy weather as it could be quite dangerous and frankly, not much fun. Hiking boots or shoes with good grip are highly recommended.

Important: If you want this classic picture of Segla, you need to hike up the neighboring mountain called Hesten.

Coming from the west along road 862, turn left after Medfjordbotn and head towards Fjordgård. After the tunnel, stay left. Follow this road for about 4 kilometers into Fjordgård.

Turn left up the hill behind Segla Grill towards the school. Above the school is a free parking lot and the trailhead.

The hike to Segla is along a dirt and rocky trail. It is not well marked but the route is fairly obvious. As you are climbing up Segla itself, there are many possible trails, so keep looking up to make sure you’re heading in a safe direction.

The trail begins by a clear sign along a wide track from the back of the parking lot. You begin to climb in elevation right away.

At the fork a few hundred meters up the hill, follow the trail to the right. Here the path becomes narrower, but still very manageable, and continues to ascend.

When you arrive at the plateau at the base of Segla, stay right and head up towards the top. This portion of the hike is quite steep and can be challenging. There are some red markings but they are not always clear. Stay to the right if you have a fear of heights. Be careful not to loosen any rocks which could fall down the trail.

If you want to experience the sheer cliff stay slightly left as you near the top. There are a few large boulders where you can peer down and see the cliff face – be careful!

At the top enjoy the view over Mefjord, Øyfjord and all the majestic surrounding mountains. Breidtinden, Senja's highest mountain, lies to the south.

Descend along the same track.
