Hike Munken to see the beautiful Lofoten mountains from above. Add on a stay a night at the Munkebu cabin close to the peak for the full experience.
This adventure is a relatively easy hike up to Munken in Lofoten. The trail starts very close to the ocean and goes all the way up to 769 meters above sea level. On the way up you will pass by Munkebu which is a cabin operated by the Norwegian Trekking Association. An overnight stay at the cabin gives you the possibility to experience the Lofoten mountains by night while staying cozy and warm inside the cabin.
The trail starts right next to Sørvågvatnet. There is a parking area on the western side of the lake if you arrive by car.
If you arrive by bus, you want to hop off at the Sørvågen Vest bus stop. For more information check the timetable for the bus traveling from Leknes to Å.
From the parking area, the marked trail goes to the northern end of the Sørvågvatnet lake and from there up the hill to the Stuvdalsvatnet lake. Once you have hiked along the eastern side of the lake, the trail will quickly bring you higher up into a steeper hill on the other side of the lake. Some sections are quite steep, but it is easy to get up there with the help of some chains and ropes that are laid out along the trail.
At the end of this steep hill, the trail once again levels out before you once again will hike up a fairly steep hill. When you reach the top, the trail goes a bit down again towards Munkebu.
From Munkebu the trail heads up towards the peak, sometimes zig-zagging up the mountain, before you reach summit itself which is quite flat.
- It is definitely worth staying a night at Munkebu. You will need a key if you want to stay at the Munkebu DNT cabin. You can get the key at the tourist information office in Moskenes. Note that you will need to become a paying member of DNT to get the key. See more information about Munkebu on Lofoten Turlag's pages.
- There are multiple small creeks and ponds along the trail so you should be able to get water along this trail.
Stay in the cabin.
Alternatively, in Reine there is accommodation available in traditional “rorbuer”, the trademark red fisherman’s cottages.
