Stuttgongkampen is an easily accessible hike past Stuttgongfossen (Stuttgong Waterfall) and through pine and birch forests. Upon reaching the top, you will have a stunning view over Jotunheimen National Park in the southwest, the Sjoa valley in the north, and even past Tjønnosen mountain lake. The landscape diversity is immense for such a short day hike.
If heading northbound, on the way down from Valdresflya, continue past Besstrond Camping and park at Hindsæter Hotel.
When coming southbound either from Vågå or Sjoa, the road intersects at Randsverk and follows the Sjoa river. Park at Hindsæter Hotel.
Buses do not run frequently, but the closest stop is “Hindseter” a few hundred meters south of the hotel.
Start the trip from Hindsæter Hotel. From there, head north and then cross road 51. After a few minutes, you will pass Stuttgongfossen, an adventure well worth a visit by itself. The route then follows the old summer farm path between Hindsæter and Griningsdalen through the pine forest. When the forest ends, the trail continues onto rocky terrain. You will reach a plateau before reaching the top. It is a nice spot to take a break, enjoy your lunch and energize before the final stretch to the top. Return the same way until you reach the marked intersection, take a left and continue down until you reach Stuttgongvegen. Then continue back to the hotel.
Where to Stay
Hindsæter is a historic hotel, that recently was renovated and is located near many trails. Make sure to try the local reindeer served at dinner and spend time in the sauna.
