Om Søndre Kolsåstoppen

Kolsåstoppen is a popular hiking destination well-known for its spectacular panoramic views of Oslo, Bærum, and the Oslo Fjord. It's close 12km proximity to Oslo's city center makes it an easily accessible hiking route for locals or internationals during the warmer months.

This beautiful hike is suitable for almost all hiking lovers, no matter your skill level - including adults, seniors, and children. The trail consists of a quiet, tall forest and a small lake on the way to the top.

Trail Description

This moderate hike begins at the Stein Gård parking lot opposite the Stein Gård Farm entrance, where you will find clearly marked sign boards, leading you on a straight dirt path parallel to Gamle Ringeriksvei.

You will then reach a fork in the path where you can continue straight along the dirt path or turn left in the direction of Kolsåstoppen - turn left. Here the path starts to ascend, leading into the forest. Here you will find signage directing you to either Søndre (South) Kolsåstoppen or Nødre (North) Kolsåstoppen. You can choose either route; but for more spectacular views of Oslo and the Oslo fjord, follow the Søndre route.

Make sure to follow the path marked with blue paint on the trees, and continue following in the direction of the Søndre Kolsåstoppen signs. You will eventually find yourself at a large, quiet lake on your right. Here, feel free to take a break and a swim if the weather is good!

Continue along the blue marked route. You'll notice that the path starts to descend, then just as you think you've somehow gone off-track, the path ascends again, and it does this for a while until the forest starts to get a little less thick, and you find yourself walking along flatter, smoother rocks, and eventually you reach the top and witness the epic views. Take a break, enjoy a snack and take in the beautiful views.

If you are looking towards Oslo, the path back down starts on your left-hand side. There will be blue marked trees to guide you. The path down can get a little steep at times but hand rails and stairs make it a little easier. You will then reach a sign that directs you back to the Stein Gård parking lot. Follow this direction.

You will pass the KIF Cabin before the trail takes you back into the thicker forest. You will get a fork in the path where you can either carry on straight, ascending, or turn down a path on your right - carry on straight. You will eventually walk past a farmhouse on your left-hand side. Continue on this path to find your way back to Gamle Ringeriksvei. Once on Gamle Ringeriksvei turn left and the Stein Gård parking lot is 300m in front of you.

Transport from Oslo

Take bus 150, “Gullhaug” to “Stein Gård”, and walk towards the Stein Gård Farm entrance. If traveling via car, you will find a parking lot on the north side of highway 168 across the entrance from Stein Gård. If you prefer to drive, but don’t have a car use Nabobil.no, with access to 4500 private owned cars across the country.

Alternately, take T-bane line 3 to “Kolsås”, and walk west under the bridge. Follow the green and silver hiking icon about .5 km until the trail begins.
