Om Gullfjelltoppen

Gullfjelltoppen is Bergen's highest peak at 987 meters above sea level. The peak is a part of the wider Gullfjellet area, an area that is very rugged with lots of cliffs and small lakes and ponds.

From Gullfjelltoppen you will on days with good weather see the ocean to the west and the Folgefonna glacier in the east. Note that weather up here can be noticeably worse than in Bergen,  so make sure you check the weather forecast before you go.

Veibeskrivelse

The trailhead is at Gullbotn northeast of the peak.

By car
Follow road E16 eastbound towards Oslo from Bergen. This will take you through Åsane and Arna and then after about 35 minutes to Trengereid. Right before the tunnel at Trengereid there is a round-a-bout where you want to take a right onto road 7. Look for signs to Hardanger and Norheimsund.

Continue on for about 2 km until you reach some parking lots on both sides of the road. This is Gullbotn where you want to park your car. You can park on both sides of the street and parking is free.

By public transport
Bus number 925 and 930 can take you from Bergen to the bus stop at Gullbotn called "Gullbotn V". Check Entur to see more about the bus schedules. The bus ride takes 40 minutes and you can easily do this hike in one day by leaving Bergen in the morning and going back to Bergen again in the afternoon. The bus departs about every 2 hours.

Turbeskrivelse

The trail starts on the west side of the road. Go pass a red building and continue up the small gravel road just pass it. Follow this road and take a right when the road splits in two. Follow this gravel road, taking a left in the next junction and then just before the road crosses a little creek you will see the trail going up to the right.

The trail will now start climbing through a lightly forested area. As you climb upwards the forest will gradually disappear and now the trail gets even steeper. This is the last leg before you reach the peak.

The entire trail is marked with cairns and blue markings.

Fasiliteter

  • Free parking
  • Drinking water can be found from streams all along the trail
  • There is a cabin called "Redningshytten" about 5 km past the peak. The cabin has an open cafe every Sunday from 1000 to 1500. The cabin is also open at all others time if you want to stop by and take your lunch there.
