Om Stoltzekleiven

Stoltzekleiven is definitely going to get your heart pumping with its almost 800 steps up to Sandviksfjellet. Being one of the most popular trails in Bergen you will not be alone and the trail is one-way only. 


Your best option is to walk from the city center of Bergen to the trailhead. It takes about 30 minutes. There is no parking in the area. 

You can also choose to take public transport from the city center to Ludebryggen and walk up from there. That will save you about 20 minutes of walking. 


The trailhead is easy to spot with a big sign right by the trail in the Fjellveien road. The first part ascends slightly between big tree trunks before the trail starts to zig-zag its way up the stone stairs. The trail is tough but easy to follow. As you get closer to the top there are also som wooden staircases. 

As this trail is one-way only you will need to get down a different route. Continue on until you meet the road along Storevatnet lake. Take a right here and continue hiking 1.1 km along the gravel road. Take another right when you reach the next gravel road and hike for another 100-200 meters until you reach Nedrediket lake. At the western end of the lake along the gravel road, you will find the trail going down to Bergen again(marked with the sign Skredderdalen). 

Alternate route
You can also choose to continue to Fløyen from the top of this hike. Just follow the sign along the gravel road. The hike along the gravel road to Fløyen is about 3.3 km.  


  • It is all stairs going up so you can wear light shoes on this hike


  • No drinking water along the trail so make sure you bring enough
  • Picnic tables and a shelter at the top
