Festvågtind is a stunning hike that rises directly from the sea near Henningsvær on Austvågøy Island. It is easily one of the most popular hikes in Lofoten.
Although it seems like a very steep hike, the trail wraps around the backside of the mountain, providing a gradual ascent the entire way up. From the summit there are breathtaking views to the south over the town of Henningsvær and the surrounding islands.
The trailhead is located just a couple of kilometres outside of Henningsvær, on the southwestern tip of Austvågøy Island.
There are several parking options either side of the trailhead. On the side closest to Henningsvær there are two pockets along the road. Alternatively, there is a parking lot on the other side of the trailhead by the large buildings at the water’s edge.
Find the trailhead at the bend in the road on the inside of the small Urvika bay. It’s a few hundred meters walk along the road from the parking options.
Look for the well-worn path coming out from the bushes. Walk up past the foundations of an old building and continue up through the rock field. Initially there are some larger boulders that require a bit of scrambling. It can sometimes be a bit difficult to find the trail, marked by arrows and faces painted on the rocks, but head straight up the middle.
After a few hundred metres you’ll reach a fork in the trail. Keep to the left.
Continuing on, you will leave the scree behind as you hike upwards and towards the backside of the mountain. The trail gets gradually steeper and can be slippery.
The trail will hook around up onto the ridge. Once you reach the ridge, turn left and follow the trail to the summit.
Return along the same route.
