Himmeltinden (964 meters) is Vestvågøy’s highest mountain and possibly Lofoten’s easiest summit over 900 meters.
Himmeltinden lies far west on Vestvågøy, where the Nappstraumen straight runs out to the sea, about a 10-kilometer drive north of Leknes
Coming from Leknes, drive along the E10 towards Å. After 6 kilometers turn right on to Offersøyveien, following the signs to Haukland.
Continue for 2.4 kilometers and then turn left onto Voieveien. After about 5 kilometers you will arrive at the beach, where there is plenty of parking.
From the parking lot at Hauklandstranda beach, follow the asphalt road that goes to the right of the tunnel toward Utakleiv, for about one and a half kilometers. Take a left at the light poles and follow the trail that leads down the old dirt road to Utakleiv. When you get to Klumpan, the terrain flattens out to a marshy area.
Just before a large, marked boulder you head to the right on a good trail. Up through the valley of Durmålsdalen awaits an incline that will get you feeling the burn! The question isn’t if you get leg cramps, it’s who between you and your hiking partners will get them first.
The tenacious valley side serves up 700 interrupted meters. The incline is steady up to the fore-summit at 931 meters. Sign the register that lies hidden in the summit cairn. This is where you will get the best summit feeling, but if you want to reach Himmeltinden’s highest point, you must go over to the plateau where the NATO-radar stands.
Out here, the trail is poor. Follow the crest across; some parts can be exposed. After you have been on the summit and checked out the view, you can return to the fore-summit and eat lunch there. Lie back and gaze out over the gorgeous mountain kingdom. The beautiful, white Hauklandsstranda beach tempts a swim down in the blinking emerald green sea, almost a thousand meters below you.
