Om Sognsvann Lake

Located on the end of the T-bane line 5 (Sognsvann) at the northern edge of the city, Sognsvann lake is perfect for a quick dose of nature. It is a popular place all year for outdoor activities. Bring a picnic to enjoy next to the lake or splash out on a waffle and coffee from the kiosk. Play volleyball on the sand court and then jump in the water to cool off. Sognsvann is also a great spot for an easy run or to begin exploring the surrounding forest, on foot or skis.

  • From downtown Oslo, take the T-bane line 5 (Sognsvann) to the final stop, Sognsvann. Follow the signs pointing to the lake, located a few hundred meters north of the T-bane stop.
  • If you are driving to Sognsvann, follow directions to the large, free public parking lot next to Sogsvann Lake.

A well-maintained gravel trail is surrounded by beautiful trees and meanders around the entire Songsvann lake. This is a popular walking and running area at all times of the year. When the weather is nice, the park at the southern end of the lake will be full of people grilling and many will be out swimming if it is warm enough. During the colder seasons, watch your step as it can get icy and slippery. Once the temperature has dropped low enough, it is possible to walk across the frozen lake. Watch to see what the locals do if you are unsure how safe it is.

Sognsvann is an excellent starting point for several longer, but still relatively easy, hikes. A popular route form Sogsvann is to head west toward Frognerseteren Restaurant and Cafe (approximately 1.5 hours one-way) where you can grab a bite to eat and enjoy an excellent view of Oslo before jumping on the T-bane line 1 (Bergkrystallen) back to the city. The trails are well marked with blue signs. A closer option is a hike to Vettakollen for a panoramic view of Oslo.
