Om Urnes Stave Church
Urnes stave church is UNESCO World Heritage listed and is the oldest and most highly decorated of the 28 stave churches still standing in Norway. Built around 1130, the church features ornamentation from the 11th century church that preceded it.
A 90 NOK ticket is required to enter the grounds and the church and also includes a short, yet informative guided tour in English as well as access to the small museum.
The ferry across the fjord from Solvorn to Ornes where the stave church is located runs every hour, on the hour between 10:00 and 16:00. Tickets are purchased just before boarding and cost 42 NOK each way (half-price for children). The journey takes around 20 minutes.
The return ferry operates at half-past every hour between 10:30 and 16:30, plus a final departure at 18:00. Return to Solvorn on the 16:30 ferry at the latest. The bus from Solvorn to Sogndal leaves at 18:15 and does not wait for the 18:00 ferry to arrive.
From the ferry dock, follow the road and signs uphill to the stave church. Purchase a ticket at the small information building which also houses a small and well-crafted museum.
Tours run in English, at around 20 minutes to every hour. This allows about 20 minutes for you to walk up to the church.
After visiting the church, drop into the café next door at Urnes Gard. Enjoy a traditional waffle and coffee and browse some of the local produce, including the delicious Eplemost (apple juice).
