Om Bitihorn

The hike from Bygdin to Bitihorn is a classic route close to Beitostølen, on the border of Vang and Øystre Slidre. The panoramic view from the top makes Bitihorn one of the most visited mountains and viewpoints in Valdres.

There are two trails taking you to the top of Bitihorn. The northern trail is the easiest route and can be accessed even in winter. The alternative southern trail requires technical climbing, and should only be undertaken if you know the route well or if you’re together with someone who does.

Upon reaching the top, there’s a huge telecom antenna and a modest cabin that’s not open to the public. Bitihorn was initially climbed in 1811 by the botanist Christen Smith, who carried out botanical investigations in Jotunheimen.

Veibeskrivelse

Bus

From Oslo or Beitostølen, you can take NOR-WAY 161 Valdresekspressen. Use Norway bus express’ travel planner to organize your trip.

The local bus 137 operating on the route Fagernes - Gjendesheim, also stops at Bygdin hotel. View the timetable, or use Entur to plan your trip.

Alight from the bus at the stop Stavtjernet, which is right next to the trailhead.

Note: buses between Beitostølen and Leirvassbu (Lom) only operate in summer, approximately from late June until through August.

Car

From Oslo, head north on Road E16 towards Bergen for 185 kilometers. When you reach Fagernes, follow the signs to Road 51 towards Vågå/Beitostølen. Drive on Road 51 for about 40 kilometers until you reach Beitostølen.

Continue past Beitostølen for about 11 kilometers until you reach the parking lot on the left, opposite of Stavtjernet Lake. Parking costs about NOK 60.

Note: Parts of Road 51 (between Garli and Maurvangen) is closed during winter and typically open from April to December.

Turbeskrivelse

From the parking lot, the trail goes southwards to Bitihorn. Follow the marked trail for about 1 kilometer until you reach a reindeer fence. Having passed the fence, the trail splits. Take the trail to the left, which follows the northern ridge of Bitihorn.

The trail is well marked and easy to follow all the way. Along the hike, you'll have great views over the lake Bygdin and the southern side of Jotunheimen.

Alternative route from Båtskaret

There is an alternative trail going up to Bitihornet from the south. The southern side of Bitihorn is steep, which gives you a great view over the sloping wooded hillsides of Valdres. This alternative trail is shorter but requires climbing experience.

Continue past Beitostølen for about 7 kilometers until you reach the small parking lot in Båtskaret on the left. If you’re taking the bus NOR-WAY 161 Valdresekspressen or the local bus 137, alight from the bus at the stop Båtskaret. Walk southwards for about 5 minutes to reach the trailhead.

Follow the marked trail from the parking lot to the top. As you reach the top, you'll get a perfect view over Jotunheimen and Valdres.
