Norwegian Scenic Route Gamle Strynefjellsvegen: Hiking Trails and Viewpoints

The old road through the Strynefjellet mountains is a throwback to late-19th century engineering. The seemingly untouched Norwegian Scenic Route Gamle Strynefjellsvegen is 27 kilometers long, leading from the hamlet of Grotli to Videsæter at the top of the Hjelledalen Valley.

Small and sleepy Grotli is the eastern endpoint of the route, situated amongst striking nature experiences. To the east is Reinheimen National Park, while Breheimen National Park lies to the south. Further west is Geiranger and its eponymous fjord.

Leading through the mountains, past colorful lakes and foliage, the road ultimately arrives at Videsæter where it begins to wind down to meet the new road. And while not part of the official scenic route, you won’t regret continuing further down the Hjelledalen Valley.

At the bottom of the valley, idyllically located on the shore of Oppstrynsvatnet Lake, is the peaceful village of Hjelle. The village acts as a gateway to adventure amongst the mountains and fjords of the Nordfjord area.

The route also combines easily with Norwegian Scenic Route Geiranger-Trollstigen, which starts 15 kilometers from Grotli and 14 kilometers from Videsæter.

Road Closures

The road is closed during winter, normally from October to June.

Check the current status and see closure dates from recent years.

Tips

  • If you want to cycle the route, start at Grotli and finish in Hjelle.
  • Consider a night in Hjelledalen Valley, either at the historic Hjelle Hotel or at Nygård Camping or Folven Camping where you can pitch a tent and rent a cabin.
