Norwegian Scenic Route Havøysund: Hiking Trails and Viewpoints

The 67 kilometer stretch of road from Kokelv to Havøysund clings tightly to Norway’s rugged northern coastline for much of the journey. Norwegian Scenic Route Havøysund provides access to the remote communities and nature here at the edge of the Arctic Ocean. From the village of Havøysund, the northernmost point of all 18 scenic routes, boats run to the even more isolated surrounding islands.

In the summer the landscape is both grey from jagged rock and green with low grass at the same time. Always present is the vast blue ocean and you’ll even stumble across the occasional sandy beach. These contrasting colours are a feast for the eyes, even more so once you start exploring the quiet local trails.

For a road trip through Norway’s raw and remote landscape combine this route with Norwegian Scenic Route Varanger. It’s about a 4.5 hour drive between the two routes. From near the beginning of the Havøysund route you can also take a detour to the North Cape and Knivskjelodden, Norway’s most northerly points that are easily reachable from the mainland.

Public Transport

The Hurtigruten ferry stops daily at Havøysund and other popular destinations along the northern coast, including Hammerfest (Northern Norway’s largest town) and Honningsvåg (for visiting the North Cape). Check the port-to-port options for shorter journeys.

Tip

  • The Måsøy Museum in Havøysund has exhibits on coastal culture and the fishing industry, plus depictions of life in the 1920s and 30s.
