Visit Ålesund and Trondheim, two of Norway’s most charming coastal cities, and drive along the famous Atlantic Ocean Road. Dine on fresh seasonal produce in contemporary restaurants and spend the night at two beautifully appointed hotels.
Ålesund’s city center is unique in Norway with its concentration of Art Nouveau architecture. A short walk up the nearby mountain, Aksla, provides panoramic views of the decorative buildings and the surrounding archipelago. The adjacent islands also feature their own summits worth a climb. For a different perspective, kayak and RIB boat trips lead through the quiet waterways and out onto the open ocean.
The Atlantic Ocean Road is one of Norway’s 18 official scenic routes. The remote stretch of road clings to the coast, known for its shallow and rough seas, before a string of bridges leap over the ocean from island to island. Stop at the viewpoints, wander along a coastal path, or trek up one of the local peaks to fully appreciate the raw landscape.
Trondheim was an important settlement during the Viking Age and remained the capital of Norway until 1217. Today the compact city features landmarks such as Nidaros Cathedral and the wooden buildings of Bakklandet. Take a boat ride and explore the historic Munkholmen Island in the Trondheimsfjord. Bymarka, the city forest, is just a tram ride or short drive away.
