Hiking in Åndalsnes and the Romsdalen Valley

Known as the “mountaineering capital”, Åndalsnes has long drawn hiking, climbing, and adventure enthusiasts from the world over. Åndalsnes is located at the end of the Romsdal Valley where the turquoise waters of the Rauma River enter the fjord. The river winds like a serpent along the valley floor, in the shadow of some Norway’s most famous landmarks.

Trollveggen is a striking sheer rock face at the northern tip of Reinheimen National Park and just 11 kilometres from Åndalsnes. “The Troll Wall” rises 1,100 meters up and features a number of spires and pinnacles at the top of the wall. There is a viewpoint at the foot of the wall, where you’ll also find the Eiafossen trail, an easy walk that leads closer to the base of the wall and along the Rauma River.

For another perspective of Trollveggen, consider one of the hikes across the valley. Litlefjellet sits on a plateau between the peaks of Romsdalshornet and Blånebba. The short trek up from the eastern side rewards with wonderful views of Trollveggen and down the Romsdalen Valley towards Åndalsnes. A more demanding option is the full-day hike along Romsdalseggen Ridge, one of the most popular hikes in Norway.

Floating out over the top of Åndalsnes is Rampestreken Viewpoint. The hike up to the viewpoint from Åndalsnes is steep, but protected under the shade of trees. Heading out along the platform feels like you’re walking on air, high above the trees below. Go early to avoid the crowds since Rampestreken is a highlight towards the end of the Romsdalseggen Ridge hike.

After exploring, be sure to stop in at the charming Sødahlhuset Café in Åndalsnes. They serve great coffee and cakes, plus light meals featuring produce from the region.

To learn more about the nature in the Romsdalen Valley, visit the The Norwegian Mountaineering Centre (Tindesenter) in Åndalsnes or the Trollveggen Visitor Center at the base of Trollveggen.
