Mjølkevegen: Multi-Day Cycling Through Valdres

Mjølkevegen is a cycle route that takes you through beautiful mountain landscapes and mountain pastures between Vinstra in Gudbrandsdalen and Gol in Hallingdal, across large parts of Valdres. The total length of the journey is 250 km. But it's possible to shorten it down to shorter stages and even stay at one place for round trips.

The route is signposted in both directions from Ruten Fjellstue in Espedalen to Storefjell Resort at Golsfjellet. Mjølkevegen is one of Norway's finest cycling tours and is part of National Cycle Route No. 5.

The tour starts at Vinstra Station or at Ruten Fjellstue in Peer Gynts Kingdom (which offers a pick-up service from the train station). From Ruten you cycle towards Jotunheimvegen, then follow this road along the edge of Lake Vinstre. There are many pleasant rest areas along the way. At Haugseter Fjellstue (about 43 km into the route) you can get good food and accommodation in beautiful surroundings at the water's edge.

It is then approx. 12 km from Haugseter to the main road FV51 at Bygdin. From here follow the FV51 to Beitostølen (approx. 14 km) where you will find a wide variety of restaurants and top quality accommodation, including the Radisson BLU Mountain Resort.

From Beitostølen town centre, turn right down towards Beito, and then follow the signposts towards Slettefjellvegen. There is a good climb up to the top of Slettefjellet (1315 m), which is the highest point of the whole trip. At the top there is a picnic area where you get an amazingly beautiful view over large parts of Jotunheimen. The road from the top then descends quite steeply down towards Vang.

From the barrier, turn left and follow Hørsvegen past Høre Stavkirke (worth a stop) and continue on until you come to Ryfoss. Here there is a gas station, grocery store and cafe. From Ryfoss we recommend crossing the E16 at the underpass rather than cycling the 200 meters along the main road, before turning off to Syndin. There is then a tough climb up to Syndin and Syndinstøga for approx. 10 km.

From Syndinstøga, Mjølkevegen continues towards Vaset (about 26 km), follow the signage. Between Nørre and Sørger Trollhovd it is approx. 2 km which can have some wet sections. Here it may be necessary to walk with the bike in some places. The route then continues on to Murkelie, then you cycle with lake Vasetvatnet on your left side all the way to Vaset.

At Vaset there are several lodging options, such as Vasetstølen and Gomobu Fjellstue. The latter lies 3 km up towards Brattåsen. From Gomobu, cycle to Brattåsen crossing, and then via Gauklie to Furuset. Continue onwards following the signs to Oset, down towards the dam where there is a cycle path. You pass Oset Mountain Hotel and turn right up to Storefjell Resort Hotel. From Vaset to Storefjell it is just under 30 km.

From Storefjell you follow the signs down to Gol, mainly along the main road towards Gol station. Alternatively, you can use the offer of transport between Storefjell Resort Hotel and Gol Station.

If you make use of the transport service to / from the train stations, the cycle route is reduced to approx. 195 km.

The route can be done both ways, but is somewhat more demanding if you start from Gol than from Vinstra.
