Mugnetinden is a popular peak to visit, because of it’s well maintained trail and magnificent views over Jotunheimen. The hike is demanding because of the elevation gain, but offers multiple spots with nice views to take a break along the way.
From Beitostølen, drive to Beito and follow the signs towards Slettefjellvegen. Drive past the toll station (NOK 80 in 2018), continue past Fleinsendin and turn left at the intersection. The parking area is located on the left side of the road, near Mugnestølen, approx. 3.5 km from the toll station.
From Vang, follow road E6 east towards Fagernes and exit road E6 after about 4 km and follow the signs to Slettefjellvegen. Drive past the toll station (NOK 80 in 2018) and continue on the gravel road for approx. 10km. The parking lot is on the right side of the road.
The trailhead is located across the road of the parking lot, and is clearly marked with cairns and white V’s. It leads gently uphill to Mugnebottjernet (small lake) and then climbs steeper up into a col. The main route, which is the least steep, and less demanding, continues straight ahead for another 300 meters and then turns to the right and uphill. The other more demanding option is to head right, but it is recommended only for experienced hikers and only uphill. The last bit of the main route leads through rocky terrain to the summit with a stunning, highly rewarding view towards Jotunheimen with peaks like Falketind, Uranostind and Hurrungadn in sight.
