About Mugnetinden

With its well-maintained trail and magnificent views of Jotunheimen, Mugnetinden is a popular peak to visit. The hike is demanding because of the elevation gain but offers multiple spots with nice views to take a break along the way.

Getting there

From Beitostølen, drive to Beito and follow the signs towards Slettefjellvegen. Drive past the toll station (the toll fee is about NOK 80), continue past Fleinsendin and turn left at the intersection. The parking lot is located on the left side of the road, near Mugnestølen, approximately 3.5 kilometers from the toll station.

From Vang, follow Road E6 east towards Fagernes. Exit road E6 after about 4 kilometers and follow the signs to Slettefjellvegen. Drive past the toll station (the toll fee is NOK 80) and continue on the gravel road for approximately 10 kilometers. The parking lot is on the right side of the road.

The nearest bus stop, Beitostølen, is located some 14 kilometers westwards from the trailhead. Bring a bike, take a taxi or hitch a ride from the bus stop to get to the trailhead.

From Oslo or Beitostølen, you can take NOR-WAY 161 Valdresekspressen. Use Norway bus express’ travel planner to organize your trip.

There's also a local bus 137 operating on the route Fagernes - Gjendesheim. View the timetable, or use Entur to plan your trip.

Note: buses between Beitostølen and Leirvassbu (Lom) only operate in summer, approximately from late June until through August.

Trail description

The trailhead is located across the road from the parking lot. It’s clearly marked with cairns and white V’s. It leads gently uphill to Mugnebottjernet, a small lake, and then climbs steeper up into a col. From here, you have two options: the first is to follow the main route that continues straight ahead for another 300 meters, before turning to the right and uphill. The last bit of this route leads through rocky terrain to the summit.

The other option is to head right, straight uphill to the top. This trail is very steep and recommended for experienced hikers. Once at the top, enjoy the stunning views towards Jotunheimen with peaks like Falketind, Uranostind, and Hurrungane.

  • The toll road fee is about NOK 80

  • Free parking.
  • Shops and restaurants are available in Beitostølen.

Where to stay

There are many accommodation options to choose from in Beitostølen. Stay at Radisson Blu Mountain resort if you're looking for Scandinavian cuisine as well as spa facilities. Beitostølen Hytter is a good option if apartment or cabin accommodation is what you're after.

If you continue northwards from Beitostølen along Road 51, you'll reach Bygdin Høyfjellshotell, a cozy mountain lodge. The lodge serves locally sourced food, including an excellent breakfast, and has a bar.
