Hestmannen (also known as Hestmonkallen) is an iconic mountain located at 571 meters above sea level on Hestmannøy island.
From the top, you can enjoy views in all directions, particularly the incredible archipelago. In the south, you'll see the Seven Sisters mountain and Dønnamannen, in the west Træna and Lovunden, in the east Svartisen as well as Rødøya in the north.
Historically the peak was used as a marker for sailors on the Helgeland coast. Legend has it in the world of Norwegian myths that this mountain (known as a troll) was Vågakallen's only son. The troll was named Hestmannen because he was always riding a horse.
Hestmannen is located on Hestmona island. The most direct way to access the island is on the ferry from Tonnes via Boat 18-193. Other locations to start from include Onøy and Lurøy. Use 177 Nordland to plan your journey.
You can also reach the island by private boat. The guest dock is located at Storseløy, right at Fergekaia.
From the docks on Hestmona island, you'll walk through a farm before reaching the trailhead. The trail will be very well marked except near the summit. Some parts are a bit steeper than others, particularly the last 10 minutes which require some cleavage climbing.
Important note: To reach the top peak, rock climbing gear is required and should only be climbed by the experienced.
