- Duration: 2-3 hours
Hovlandsnuten is a very popular peak to climb near Sauda, with lovely views out over the Saudafjord. Stone steps laid by Nepalese Sherpas help ease the steep trail to the top. On the peak there’s a small cabin where you can shelter from the elements and admire the view.
The trailhead to Hovlandsnuten is a short detour from Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke. In Saudasjøen, 2 kilometers from Sauda on Road 520, turn at the sign to Nordstøldalen (there’s also a harder to spot sign for Hovlandsnuten) and follow Amdalsvegen Road.
Continue up Amdalsvegen until you reach some roadside parking and a signpost for Hovlandsnuten.
The trail is clear and well-marked. Cross the bridge and follow the dirt road as it starts ascending amongst some cabins. After about a kilometer, look for a sign through the forest and follow the trail.
The trail continues through Hovlandsstølen, passing by more cabins, with the peak directly ahead. Next you will come to the stone steps laid to ease the climb to the peak.
As you near the top the terrain becomes a bit rockier, and the trail leads around the back of the peak and towards the summit.
