About Gavelen
Hike an easy road to the edge of Havøya Island for a view out over the Arctic Ocean. The road runs past the tall windmills that stand up above Havøysund and lead to the Arctic View restaurant, poised on the cliff’s edge. At once comfortable and remote, this is an adventure for all.
Getting there
The trail begins by the cemetery in Havøysund, at the northern tip of Norwegian Scenic Route Havøysund.
Walk up Søndregata past the supermarket and continue uphill along the road as it turns into Storvannsveien.
As you reach the lake the road turns into Kirkegårdsveien. Follow this road along the edge of the lake which will bring you to the cemetery.
Trail description
From the cemetery, follow the road north with Storvannet Lake to your right.
The road has a steady ascent towards the wind farm. When you reach fork in the road by the first windmill, hold right and continue up the road.
The road will begin to flatten out and you will see along the plateau ahead. Continue, holding right at the next fork and hiking along the cliff’s edge. You’ll pass Sjåvikvannet Lake to your left and continuing straight, come to Gavlvannet Lake on the right.
It’s not too much further along the road until you spot the Arctic View restaurant at the edge of the island. Make your way down there to enjoy the view.
