About Kvassheim Lighthouse to Ogna

The route from Kvassheim Lighthouse to Ogna is one of the many relaxing and accessible coastal walks in Jæren. This particular trail explores the southernmost part of the region, traveling along rocky shores and sandy beaches. As you near Ogna the landscape changes, with the flatlands giving way to more hilly terrain.

A large part of the trail is along the prettify Brusanden Beach. You can also take a detour from the beach to visit “Hitler’s Teeth”, a stony fence built to defend against the Allies in World War II.

Kvassheim is the southern end of the hike from Varhaug Old Churchyard (8.8 kilometers).

Getting there

Kvassheim Lighthouse is located between the villages of Vigrestad and Brusand, at the southern end of Norwegian Scenic Route Jæren.

Driving along Road 44, look for signs to “Kvassheim fyr”. There is a parking lot between the small harbor and the lighthouse.

The local train runs from Stavanger to Ogna, making it possible to hike out-and-back from there. The closest train station to Kvassheim is in Vigrestad, a 4 kilometer walk.

Trail description

The trail is clear and easy to follow and starts in front of the lighthouse.

Head south, following the trail along the pebble beach. After a bit more than a kilometer you’ll arrive at the first stretch of beach, Kvalbeinsanden.

At the end of this stretch, pass the boathouses and cross the footbridge over to Brusanden. Alternatively, before crossing the footbridge you can take a detour on the path to the north to see “Hitler’s Teeth” alongside Road 44.

Follow Brusanden for its entire 3 kilometers. Hike past the rocky outcrop at the southern end and along the shorter Holmasanden Beach. 500 meters past the end of the beach, take the road to the left to Skogly Camping. Continue along this road back to Road 44, cross, and continue into Ogna.
