Discover the small hidden bays of Indre and Ytre Syltevika along the Syltefjord on a half-day hike near Hamningberg.
The trail to the coast runs through a pretty valley alongside Syltevikvatnet Lake. At Indre Syltevika sits a simple cabin where you can spend the night. There are also good options for camping in the area.
The trailhead is about 10 kilometers from Hamningberg, a short detour from Norwegian Scenic Route Varanger (Road 8100).
5 kilometers south of Hamningberg at Sandfjord, turn off Road 8100 onto the gravel road and follow it for 4.5 kilometers to the end. Note that this road is in poor condition and may not be suitable for smaller vehicles.
The trail around Syltevika is clear. It can be wet, especially by the lake, so waterproof footwear is recommended.
From the parking lot, continue in the same direction along the valley towards Syltevikvatnet Lake. Follow along the eastern shore of the lake.
At the end of the lake, turn left and follow the northern edge until you reach a creek. Follow the creek to the coast and Indre Syltevika. Continue to your right and over to the cabin.
Keep following the coastline and on to the stony path up and over to Ytre Syltevika.
From there, the trail continues to the southwest and back to Syltevikvatnet Lake. Rejoin the trail along the eastern shore of the lake and back to the parking lot.
You can instead choose to follow the western shore of the lake towards Indre Syltevika, but you will need to cross the creek.
