About Ekkerøya
The island of Ekkerøya is well worth a short detour for its cliffs, sandy beach, and rich birdlife. You can walk around the island in an hour or two, exploring the small trails and, in late summer, hunting for cloudberries. A shorter, 1.5 kilometer trail is also available.
Over 50 different species of birds have been recorded on Ekkerøya
Getting there
Ekkerøya is 15 kilometers east of Vadsø, along Norwegian Scenic Route Varanger (Road 75).
Follow the signs to Ekkerøya and once on the island continue towards the harbor. Just before you reach the harbor, look for a “Feriehus” sign and turn left. Then take the next left and shortly after you’ll see a gravel parking lot.
Trail description
The trail runs around the edge of the island and is marked and clear. Feel free to explore, wandering the side trails and hunting for cloudberries.
From the parking lot, follow the trail east along the clifftops. This area is a nature reservation and home to tens of thousands of birds.
Continue along the northern edge of the island and from there you you can choose to follow the roads and trails back to the parking lot, or continue on and visit the sandy beach by the entrance to the island.
