About Bud Coastal Trail

The coastal trail in the village of Bud passes through the woods and winds along the coast, past several scenic viewpoints before returning back through the village itself. A walk along the trail is a wonderful beginning or end to a drive along the Atlantic Ocean Road.

Bud was once the biggest trading post between Bergen and Trondheim. These days, it’s a charming fishing village.

Getting there

Bud is situated at the western end of Norwegian Scenic Route Atlanterhavsvegen. Roads 6060 and 664 meet in Bud.

It’s possible to start from anywhere along the trail, but one of the easiest options is to park by the soccer field to the east of the village along Road 664. Another option is by the Ergan Fort.

Trail description

From the parking lot by the soccer field, follow the edge of the football field to the right of the community building. The trail begins from the far corner.

Follow the marked trail which leads through the woods along the foot of Gulberget mountain. Eventually you’ll reach a cabin known as a “bålhytte”, where you can rest inside and have a small fire. The trail continues through the woods until it meets the road.

Cross the road and continue along the trail which now leads along the coast back towards Bud. There are several viewpoints and rest areas along this stretch.

Back by Bud, the trail runs past the Ergan Fort and then follows a road through the edge of the village before heading out to another viewpoint. The trail once again follows the road towards the campground and back to the soccer field.

  • While the trail is quite good, it is a bit too narrow and rough for wheelchairs. Most strollers should handle the trail fine.

  • Free parking

Where to stay

There are varied lodging options along the Atlantic Ocean Road, with some stunning locations available.

Håholmen Havstuer is a hotel, restaurant, and pub occupying the former fishing village of Håholmen. Situated on a tiny island, the hotel is accessed by boat from Geitøya Island on the Atlantic Ocean Road.

Not far from Farstad Beach is Hustadvika Guesthouse where every room comes with a sea view.

The Atlantic Road Cabins (Atlanterhavsveien Sjøstuer) in Kårvåg offer fully self-contained cabins and camping.

Alternatively you can stay in the bigger centers, Kristiansund or Molde.
