About Knappen

Hiking to the top of Knappen Mountain allows you to experience far-reaching views without too much effort. Upon passing the tree line and reaching the top, you’ll see Atnasjøen Lake in the north, with the mountains of Rondane National Park to the west of the lake and Gravskardhøgda to the east of the lake.

The well-marked trail travels gradually uphill to the top, with plenty of opportunities to lie down and take a break in the soft reindeer moss along the way.

Getting there

Turn off Road 27 (Norwegian Scenic Route Rondane) at Rondetunet Outdoor Activity Center, where you can park your car.

Trail description

From the parking lot, take the sign-posted trail to Knappen. Although the trail is slightly rocky, it’s well-marked and easy to follow, traveling gradually uphill. There are some wet sections, so be sure to wear waterproof footwear.

Enjoy the views as you pass the tree line. Descend along the same trail.

Where to stay

Offering cabin and campsite rental, Rondetunet Outdoor Activity Center is the perfect starting point for outdoor adventures, which in addition to hiking, includes fishing and canoe paddling. The main buildings include a café as well as a shop selling equipment for outdoor activities.

Rondane Gjestegård is a small charming inn offering hotel and cabin accommodation, as well as cozy communal areas for relaxation. Their restaurant serves locally sourced breakfast and dinner.
