About Bygdin to Filefjellstuene
This leg starts with a beautiful boat ride across Bygdin Lake to Eidsbugarden Hotel. The historic propelled ferry M/B Bitihorn has run across Bygdin Lake every summer since 1912. Operating at 1,060 meters above sea level, this is Northern Europe’s highest ferry tip. Watch as the beautiful Bygdin Lake stretches out in front of you like a giant mirror with the Jotunheimen peaks at the heart of its mysterious depths. From Eidsbugarden, the route continues alongside Tyin, another serene mountain lake, to Filefjellstuene Mountain Lodge.
Bygdin is a 3.5-hour drive from Oslo. From Oslo, head north on Road E16 towards Bergen, and drive for 185 kilometers. When you reach Fagernes, follow signs to Road 51 (Norwegian Scenic Route Valdresflye), towards Vågå/Beitostølen. Rollow Road 51 for another 50 kilometers until you reach Bygdin. Here you will find parking. The drive from Bergen takes 5 hours.
BusFrom Oslo, take the NW161 Valdresekspressen to the stop “Bygdin.”
This stage starts with a scenic boat ride across Bygdin Lake. The boat departs from the dock at Bygdin Mountain Hotel and takes you slowly past a few islands, peninsulas, and through narrow straits toward Bygdisheim.
After approximately two hours, the boat approaches Eidsbugarden Hotel. From Eidsbugarden, take the graveled road running past Tyinholmen Mountain Lodge and alongside Tyin Lake (Tyinvatnet). Bike for approximately 19 kilometers until you reach a paved road (RV53). Turn left onto the paved road, and bike downhill (approximately 4.5 km) until you reach Tyinkrysset. Please be aware of slightly heavier traffic along this section.
At Tyinkrysset, turn right onto Nystøgovegen Road. Bike uphill for approximately 1 kilometer until you see signs for Filefjellstuene on the left-hand side. Follow the signs to Filefjellstuene by biking the graveled Grøvstølvegen Road the final 400 meters up to the mountain lodge.
Remember to book tickets for the boat in advance. Note that you will need a separate ticket for your bike. Visit the JVB website for schedules and prices.
