Admire Europe’s lowest-lying glacier
- Destination: Helgeland
- Season: January-December
Braset rest stop has an idyllic location by the Holandsfjord. This is the perfect place to admire Engabreen (or Engenbreen), a branch of the Svartisen Glacier. As clear as crystal, it’s visible between mighty mountains on its way down to the fjord.
With its lowest point located only a hundred meters above sea level, Engabreen is Europe’s lowest-lying glacier. The main glacier Svartisen derives its name from the old designation “Svartis,” meaning “black ice,” which refers to the deep blue hue of the ice. Svartisen is Norway’s second largest glacier.
The rest stop is stone covered and has benches, and it’s a good place for a picnic along the road.
